Bonaire is a playground where almost anyone can notch seeing a new species. For macro lovers, the candy-colored treats divers stumble on aren’t just frogfish and seahorses but also many juvenile fishes running the gamut from spotted drums to angelfish, plus blennies including sailfin and red-lipped varieties, and crabs such as teardrop decorator. Yellowhead jawfish squirreling eggs in their mouths aren’t hard to find. Eel species local to the island include viper morays, chain morays and purple-mouth morays. With so much to witness, diving here is less about covering real estate and more about staying still, waiting to see what your eye can pick out.

Average Visibility: Ranges from 50 to 100 feet
Average Water Temperature: Averages 80 in summer, but may drop to mid-70s in winter
Weather: Bonaire is an arid, sunny island swept by constant trade winds. Daytime temps rarely rise above 85 in summer, or fall below 75 in winter

2. Cayman Islands

Average Visibility: 100 feet or more.
Average Water Temperature: 78-82°F year-round.
Weather: Diving is good all year. Cayman has mild air temperatures of 70-80°F year-round and a little more rain during the summer months.
What to Wear: Bathing suit, shorty or skin suit in summer; winter may be more comfortable with a 3-5 mm wetsuit.

3. Curacao

Average Visibility: Like most destinations, the visibility ranges based on weather. You can expect viz from 50 to 100 feet.
Average Water Temperature: You can expect low to mid-80s in summer and mid-to hight 70s in winter.
Weather: Summers are warm with average temperatures of 85 degrees. Temperatures tend to drop to the mid-70s in winter.

4. U.S. Virgin Islands

Average Water Temperature: Temperatures range from the high 70s in winter to mid-80s in summer.

Average Visibility: Averages between 80-100 feet.
Average Water Temperature: Between 80-85 degrees Fahrenheit.
Weather: The average highs are around 80 degrees Fahrenheit year-round.
