My husband and I took our son and daughter (both age 15) on our once a year dive trip, we went to Akumal Beach Resort, in Akumal, Mexico (about an hour away from Cancun). I always book a trip in January for a week in June, I was looking for cheap, well with 2 teenagers, there isn't much out there that is cheap anymore. I used air-miles, so all I needed was the hotel and diving. Our kids got certified last year and we went to Cozumel, and you know it is hard to beat Cozumel for the great diving and the reasonable prices! We have went to Cozumel 5 times now, so it was time to go somewhere new, I started looking into Playa Del Carmen, and then I found this little resort, Akumal Beach Resort with a dive operation on the premises and decided to give a try. It was really cheap, so I thought what do we have to lose? Also, my husband really wanted to dive the Cenotes, and they were all right there. First, the diving - well... we won't go back for the diving, thats for sure. The dive operation, Venta Diving was actually pretty good, we dove with a husband and wife team, Karen and Yurgen (spelling?), they were great people and great with the kids. We did the Centotes with the other dive instructor/divemaster, I can't remember his name, but he also was very good and informative. I would say the whole trip was worthit because of the Cenote diving. Totally different from any diving in the wide-open caribbean. It was weird, you would be going thro this little tunnel of a cavern and then all of sudden it would open up to a huge chamber with all these stalactites. The kids thought it was really cool! My daughter was a little scared/uncomfortable about going, but we talked her into it and she was really glad she went. I was surprised, the water wasn't freezing. I usually get chilled anyway, and I wear a 3mil. I wore my 3 mil and a hood and I was fine. We didn't get any pictures, I flooded our underwater camera(I forgot to check the o-ring), the first day of diving. I guess we were due for a new one, I wanted to go digital anyway. About the rest of diving, I really can't tell you where we dove, they do things a little different over on the mainland, a one tank dive in the morning at 8:30, so thats what we did. It sure wasn't at all like diving off Cozumel, there wasn't much color and the reefs were very worn (maybe from the hurricane last year, I don't know). Not a lot of fish either. Last year we came over from Cozumel and went to the Tortiguas (spelling?)(by Playa Del Carmen), I bet we saw over a 100 turtles on that dive. This time, we did see a huge turtle, and I mean huge! It was a loggerhead, its head really does look like ET. Thats about it for the diving, not to much to really say about it. The resort we stayed at, I choose mainly for the kids, so they would have a good time. It was an all-inclusive, I know most of you - don't like all-inclusives, but we do, when we take the kids, 2 teenagers eat and drink a lot! It was perfect - It was your typical all-inclusive hotel with all the strings attached. Except, it was more layed back and a lot smaller. The staff wasn't too crazy and annoying, and the music wasn't blaring by the pool. There weren't alot of little kids running around either. The kids met some other great kids, so they were kept busy with all of them. I had booked 2 rooms, so the kids were really happy about that. It gave us all some peace! The food was fine, a buffet, mexican and italian restaurant. The drinks were also great and plentiful... The resort has a beautiful beach, we have been lots of places and I would have to say its one of the best I have seen. I kept on reading how great the snorkeling was off the beach on tripadvisor.com, and of course being a diver, I was thinking yeah, right! Well, those people were telling the truth, within about 5-10 minutes you were seeing turtles, everywhere, big and little ones. We also saw a huge barracuda and some rays, everytime you went out there. We usually go out on a fishing trip on these vacations, and never catch anything, so we go again this year - $100 for the 4 of us for 3 hrs. -pretty cheap, I thought. So we weren't expecting much... They took us straight out from the resort, and not too far out either, and my husband and son both caught fish, a wohoo, mahi-mahi (spelling?) and a huge 7'-8' sail fish. Of course we got lots of pictures and had to throw the sail fish back. We went to Playa Del Carmen, its pretty comericialized and too many people, we did our shopping and got the heck out of there! We went to Xehal, for only about 3 hrs, it was too hot and way too many people. If you are into snorkeling, thats the place to go. The kids liked it, you could jump off some huge cliffs and tube down a river. So now I am looking forward to next years trip already, maybe a live-aboard! But I don't think the kids will go on this one, not enough people on one boat!
