Just returned from a GREAT trip to Hawaii. Spent four days on Oahu before going to the Big Island. Since I was with family I had only one day to dive Oahu. After contacting a few dive operators and finding out they didn't have boats out for the day I could dive I happened upon Captain Bruce's Dive Charters. I believe I had seen a favorable report on either Scubaboard or Trip Advisor. Well, whomever wrote the favorable report had it right!
Divemaster for the day was Alan Goldberg. Alan picked me up in a spacious, air conditioned van on time at my hotel. He took my gear, stowed it in back and off we went. Enroute to the harbor he maintained a lively conversation about Oahu and its people. I thoroughly enjoyed the ride!
Upon arriving at the harbor I was pleased to find a good dive boat, clean and well maintained. Not very spacious but plenty of room for our gear. They had all the right stuff - rinse tanks, fresh water hose to rinse off, water and snacks, etc. The crew was personable and helpful.
On our way to the dive site we saw humpback whales! The Captain obliged our desire to see them so we were able to get a great look at them. Our first dive was at the Mahi wreck and as we approached we could see a humpback swimming directly over the wreck. There were divers down when we saw this - boy, if they looked up they got an eyeful!
Alan gave a very thorough dive briefing. He emphasized safety, explained the dive site well and told us what animals and some behaviors we might see. During the dive Alan kept in contact with all the divers in our group and kept a very nice, slow, easy pace throughout which enabled me to video without feeling like I was holding up the group. Alan was excellent at spotting out critters and we saw some wonderful things due to his watchful eye - an eagle ray feeding, speckled lion fish, sponge crab and even a moray eel hanging upside down in a pipe on the wreck. I cracked up when he pointed out the eel.
On the next dive we went to the Makaha Caverns and Alan was excellent at finding the white tipped reef sharks resting in the caverns. Again, Alan was wonderful about pointing animals out and making sure everyone was having a safe, fun dive.
If I make it out to Oahu again I will certainly dive with Captain Bruce again as I had such a nice time. They treated me very well even though I was a one day customer. Obviously, they understand the value of customer service.
