Fiji dive vacation

by dwyatt

My trip was from 29 July thru 12 Aug. First let me say that this was my first time diving in this part of the world. We flew out of LAX and arrived at Nandi 10 hrs later, long flight. We were met by a driver from Bequa Lagoon and our Luggage arrived with us, good thing. Three hour drive across the island, north to south side and we arrived at Pacific harbor and boarded a boat. 45 mins later we were at Bequa Island and Bequa Lagoon resort. We were met by members of the staff musically. We then checked in at the main Bure and were greeted and briefed by the resort mananger. We were then escorted to our Bure. The meals there were to die for. Plenty to eat and you chose what you wanted from three menu items for lunch and diner and dinner came with soup and dessert. The staff and the Figian people were very friendly and grasious people. Lets get to the diving.
The only thing we had to bring to the dive boat was a mask , fins and a camera if you had one. They changed off your tanks between dives. water temp was 79 F. and the vis was never below 70 ft. more than that most of the time. Day 1: two tank morning boat dive. Soft corals of every color. Schools of anthis, damsels and clown fish. Lots of hard corals birdsnest, brain, staghorn, etc. I was seeing things for the first time I had only seen in pics before. Blue & Black ribbon eels, Emperor Angles. Nudibranchs, flat worms. The shark dive was outstanding we saw several different types of sharks, along with a giant grouper. The highlight of the dive is when a 18 ft. female Tiger Shark came in. Massive! way cool! At the end of our first week my daughter and I parted ways and she went back home and I went onto Matava Eco resort on the Island of Kandavu. It was about a 30 min. plane ride there from Suva. Then a 45 min. boat ride to the resort. Was met by the resort host Maggie. He was the best, funny, hilarious and attentive. Always there with a drink for you checking to see if you were comfortable. A shout out for George again very helpful. He escorted me over to the village one day and to the waterfall, great time. It is an eco resort but other than not having plug-ins in your Bure they were very nice and comfortable. The food there was outstanding! several nights there the catch of the day was turned into Shashimi, hope I spelled it correctly. The main bure had charging stations. The dive shop was small but it was adequate. You could see the Astraloba reef from the resort. The diving there was out of this world. There were soft corals and massive walls of hard corals. The high light of this location was the Manta reef dive. It was only 20 min. ride to the reef. We saw 2 of them thay were about 15 to 20 ft. across. The most awsome experence! I also came across a sea crate, but all I got was a video clip that I cannot post here, rats.
I also did a night dive there that was great in its self but the night sky was breath taking and you could see the southern cross as if it was close enough to touch it. It was the best trip of my life so far. The people, the diving and the location. Enjoy, oh yes if you go to my face book address (Dave Wyatt) you can see the video clips and some of the other pics I took.
