When most people think about our National Parks, they envision snow-covered mountain ranges, open plains and historic buildings. But there is a wealth of dive sites within America’s parks that few people ever discover — many of them right in your backyard. Test your knowledge of the park’s offerings by reading the clues below and guessing which National Park this dive site is part of.
Clue # 1
This National Park contains seven small inlands, or keys, that were first discovered in 1513 by Ponce de Leon.
Clue # 2
The park encompasses more than 64,000 acres of water, yet only 39 acres of land. And it is known for its abundance of turtles although there is very little fresh water.
Clue # 3
It is often referred to as the Gibraltar of the Gulf because it contains the second-largest 19th-century masonry defense structures (with more than 16 million bricks) in the Western Hemisphere.
Clue # 4
It was used as a prison during the Civil War, and its most notable detainee was Samuel Mudd, sentenced in connection with the Lincoln assassination.
