Artist Jason deCaires Taylor is well known for his underwater sculpture parks in Grenada and Cancun, but this new statue in the Bahamas, deployed in October 2014, represents a more direct plea for the plight of the world’s oceans.
Inspired by the ancient Greek myth of Atlas, who held the world on his shoulders, this 60-ton, 16-foot-high sculpture, called Ocean Atlas, figuratively holds the weight of the world's oceans. Modeled on a Bahamian girl, the statue was commissioned by the Bahamas Reef Environmental Education Foundation and will be the centerpiece of the planned Coral Reef Sculpture Garden.
Constructed of pH-neutral materials, it's hoped that the sculpture will attract marine life, much like its counterparts in Grenada and Canus.
