Performance:

The redesigned Tortuga puts the majority of its buoyant lift in the back to keep the chest area clear, and now brings some additional buoyancy forward, wrapping partially around the waist for added lift and surface stability. The harness cinches up nicely and stays in place with no discernible tank wobble. Thin, velour-covered padding cushions the back and lumbar areas, there’s more substantial padding under the shoulders and a nice neoprene neck roll. Although female divers found the BC a bit long in the torso, all test divers agreed the Tortuga is a comfortable, stable BC. Weight pouches load easily when wearing the BC, but can be tricky to lock into place. Test divers also found that when it came time to ditch, the weight handles could be hard to find and grab for quick release (but would improve with practice). The Tortuga’s power inflator offers responsive button action, and all valves work together to deliver efficient ascent control. Cargo pockets, while a little tight on volume, are easy to access.

Bottom Line:

Overall, test divers liked the Tortuga. The hybrid air-cell design offers the best of both jacket and back buoyancy worlds, creating a comfortable fit and a stable ride.
