A sperm whale approaches the Hercules ROV

The Hercules ROV (Remote Operated Vehicle) was exploring the coast of Louisiana when it came across a curious sperm whale nearly 600 meters beneath the surface. Occurrences like this are rare at this depth, especially with underwater robots. The researchers were surprised to see the whale stick around and circle the ROV a few times, giving us a unique look at this magnificent creature.

The Hercules ROV is remotely operated by the E/V Nautilus, a research ship studying the oceans on behalf of the The Ocean Exploration Trust. Led by Titanic-discoverer Dr. Robert Ballard, the team plans to explore and map various locations in the Gulf and Caribbean regions.
