Lobster Season Kicks off with Ocean Enterprises' 29th Annual Lobster Diving Contest
Ocean Enterprises' 29th Annual Lobster Diving Contest.
San Diego, CA, September 27, 2008 - Lobster Season is just around the corner and Ocean Enterprises will be holding their 29th Annual Lobster Diving Contest to celebrate the start of the season. Recreational divers are given several days to hunt lobsters before the commercial season begins on Wednesday, October 1, 2008. Many avid lobster hunters don't hesitate to get out at the start of the season, which is 12:01 AM on Saturday, September 27, 2008. This is the best opportunity for the entire season to catch lobsters before the commercial season begins. To be eligible for the contest, divers can dive all through the night from 12:01 AM until 1:00 PM Saturday afternoon and bring their lobsters in to Ocean Enterprises throughout the night and morning, where they will be kept alive in tanks for the 1:00 PM judging. Because Ocean Enterprises is an environmentally aware company, all live lobsters will be eligible to win prizes rather than only the largest lobsters. This will encourage divers to conserve the larger lobsters, which have the most potential for breeding and continuing a healthy lobster population in San Diego. The large female and male lobsters will also be donated to the Birch Aquarium at Scripps for their breeding program in order to repopulate the local areas.
Lobster Diving and Cooking Seminars:
For those who want to learn more about lobster hunting prior to heading out into the ocean, Ocean Enterprises has organized free lobster hunting seminars taught by Mark Flahan at 6:00 PM and 8:30 PM on Friday, September 26, 2008. Mark Flahan has been a diving instructor and Safety Officer at SDSU for 38 years. Having lectured at Ocean Enterprises for many years, Mark's seminar consistently draws many interested people eager to learn about the sport. Tommy Daly from Underwater Kinetics will also be conducting a seminar on dive lights at 7:30 PM the same evening. For divers and non-divers, Ocean Enterprises will also have a seminar about cooking lobster on Saturday, September 27 fro, 11am-12pm presented by Dr. Bert Kobayashi and Chef Kai from the adventure cooking show "Kai Food." Various dishes will be prepared during the seminar for guests to sample.
Ocean Enterprises is also having a Lobster Mania Sale and Used Equipment Sale that same weekend and will be open from Friday morning, September 26, 2008 at 10am all night long through Saturday afternoon at 6:00 PM and again on Sunday from 9:00 AM-5:00 PM. There will be a chili cookout all night long from Friday night at 9 pm until Saturday morning.
