ScubaLab Testers Choice Scuba Diving BCs: Atomic Aquatics BC1

The Atomic Aquatics BC1 was rated the best in the jacket-style category by scuba divers during the ScubaLab 2017 BC review. See what made this BC the favorite of our test divers in the video review below.

I'm Roger Roy, the ScubaLab Director. We tested the Atomic Aquatics BC1. With standout performance that won praise from test divers, it was our Testers Choice for jacket-style BCs.

We tested the BC1 at Blue Grotto Dive Resort in Central Florida. We conducted objective test in the pool to measure its buoyant lift and inherent buoyancy and to gauge its ability to cope with a runaway power inflator. We also conducted a series of test dives where testers scored the BC in ten categories including comfort, stability and ascent control.

Atomic says it rethought every material and component when designing their first BC, and it shows. There's the ratcheting tank band lock, self-sealing zippers, the rugged, waterproof fabric that dries almost before you get it off and integrated-weight latches that look that they were sourced from the space program.

The compulsive attention to detail — and frankly, the price — seemed to verge on overkill, but test divers gave it top scores in nearly every category and overwhelmingly selected it as their favorite of the test. Not because of titanium coated stainless D-rings and the like, but because the BC1 excels in the qualities a BC needs; stability, comfort, control, convenience and durability.

Some shorter divers felt that the side panels extended a little high and some found it hefty topside — it's just over 10 pounds but neutral in the water. That its design spared no cost shows in its price, but what really impressed us was its level of performance.
