Video: SAROS Pod Converts Ocean Water Into Drinking Water

A company out of North Carolina is making big waves in the desalination industry.

EcoH2O Innovations has created a “desalination pod” that converts saltwater to drinking water using the process of reverse osmosis and energy from ocean waves. The pod, called SAROS, is deployed beyond breaking waves, and the fresh water is pumped back to shore through a small hose.

With potable water scarcity a huge problem on islands and in coastal regions, the company hopes SAROS will provide a sustainable solution for small-scale freshwater access.

The company’s only testing thus far has been in North Carolina, but a pilot study in Puerto Rico is in the works for late 2016.
