Olympus has announced the latest addition to their series of rugged, compact digital cameras. The TG-6 is waterproof without a housing to 50 feet and uses a fast, wide-angle f/2.0 lens, back-lit high-speed CMOS sensor and powerful TruePic VIII image processor. The rear LCD monitor features 1.05 million dot resolution for improved visibility. The camera can shoot RAW images and capture 4K and Full HD video. The new Tough TG-6 has the same heavy-duty durability and reliable performance of past models and adds some new functionality and an updated microscope mode and three new underwater white balance modes.

The improved Microscope mode on the TG-6 takes the macro mode of its predecessor to the extreme. This mode can capture high-quality, detailed images of small subjects that are hard to see with the naked eye (think insect feet and antennae or snowflakes) at 7x the magnification when the subject is 1 centimeter away from the front of the lens. You can also switch between magnification ratios of 1x, 2x and 4x with the push of a button. The LCD monitor can zoom in up to 44.4 x.

To supplement the microscope mode, the TG-6 also features a Focus Stacking mode and Focus Bracketing mode. Focus Stacking captures multiple shots while automatically shifting focus from foreground to background and then merging the areas in focus into a single full pixel photo with a deep depth of field. Focus Bracketing captures up to 30 images while shifting focus from foreground to background to instantly set the focal position.

In addition to the improved Macro capabilities, the TG-6 features updates to its underwater photography tool box. The camera has five underwater modes; Underwater Wide for dim underwater conditions, Underwater Snapshot for shallow water with ambient light, Underwater Macro for close-up shots, Underwater Microscope for capturing super tiny subjects up to 1 centimeter from the lens and Underwater HDR for capturing scenes with dramatic bright and dark sections.

Where the TG-5 only had one underwater white balance mode, the latest Tough has three modes for more precise color at different depths. Underwater Shallow is for depths up to 10 feet, Underwater Mid-Range for depths of 10-50 feet deep and Underwater Deep is used for depths below 50 feet.

New accessories for the TG-6 include an exclusively designed underwater housing capable of depths up to 148 feet and a new fisheye converter lens. The fisheye lens delivers both circular fisheye photography and diagonal fisheye photography via zoom control. It requires a separate adapter and is only compatible with the TG-6. Other accessories include a lens barrier to protect the lens surface from scratches and dirt, teleconverter lens, flash diffuser, LED light guide and more.

The Olympus Tough TG-6 will be available in red and black beginning in late June 2019.
