At Baselworld 2017, Citizen introduced the new 1,000m Professional Diver as part of its Promaster series, the world’s first light-powered 1,000m saturation diving watch.
Since its launch in 1989, Promaster has been the preferred watch brand among professionals who challenge their limits. Promaster watches withstand the toughest of conditions, achieve top endurance at a guaranteed level of safety, and offer superior functions for various activities.
Taking design inspiration from the shape and structure of a turban shell, the Eco-Drive Professional Diver 1000m is an ISO-compliant diver’s watch that performs even in saturation diving environments. The escape valve set at 10 o’clock on the case side releases the helium gas that enters the watch to prevent any damage or rupture upon movement. There is no need for regular battery replacement thanks to the Eco-Drive technology, which enables the watch to charge in any type of light—whether solar or artificial—to keep running forever. The power reserve Indicator tells divers the remaining battery charge so that they can enjoy worry-free diving.
The watch has a unidirectional bezel and bezel-locking mechanism, in line with the ISO standards for diving watches. This improves safety by eliminating the danger of a diver accidentally turning the bezel the wrong way during a dive. When the bezel lock is set to FREE, an orange warning color appears to warn the user. The crown has the same mechanism, revealing an orange color between the case and the crown to tell the owner when the crown is not correctly pushed into lock mode. The photo-luminescent markings on the watch absorb light quickly and stay bright longer. The luminous materials used for this model have more than twice the afterglow brightness than conventional luminous materials—for beyond 5 hours.
Expert technologies were employed to reach the highest levels of durability and water resistance. Citizen conducted validation and vilification testing with cooperation of JAMSTEC (Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology), the ocean research authority in Japan, to conduct a leak test and examine the effects of high water pressure to check waterproof performance in a high-pressure environment as well the dial visibility, and luminous features in deep waters. A diver’s watch that performs with 1,000m saturation diving must not only pass the water resistance test, but also a test to keep performing for 15 days in a pressurized chamber that contains helium and oxygen (even 100% helium gas) and then revert back to atmospheric pressure within 3 minutes after high-speed decompression. The pressure is an unimaginable 125 barometer, which demands high durability and water resistance function.
Citizen’s proprietary titanium material, Super Titanium™, is created by using various methods of surface-hardening technology, including their own patented Duratect treatment, to achieve the most durable finish on the watch’s surface. Duratect is also used on the adjoining watch parts to realize the same goal. Individual components like the crown tube and escape valve are bonded together at the atomic level to achieve the highest level of adhesion (also known as “solid phase diffusion bonding”). The result is not just tougher materials, but durability capable of withstanding 1,000 meters of water pressure.
