First Look at the USS Mohawk in its New Home

Our intrepid Photo Editor Katy Danca Galli was there to see the Mohawk off on its new life as an artificial reef and brought back a boatload (pun intended) of images.

Not long after, a lucky few underwater adventurers went down shortly after the all clear and became the first to check out the USS Mohawk following its intentional scuttling Monday, July 2, 30 miles off the coast of Florida, near Sanibel Island.

They brought back video of the former battleship, sitting upright and resplendent beneath the waves. A fitting tribute for its Independence Week sinking, the Mowhawk is the U.S.'s newest underwater war memorial, dedicated to all U.S. veterans.

Those divers also returned with the first clues to a scavenger hunt designed for scubanauts to discover while they're exploring the wreck.
