Every year from June to July, Australia’s Ribbon Reefs, part of the Great Barrier Reef, play host to popular seasonal visitors: migrating dwarf minke whales. During this brief window, snorkelers have the opportunity to encounter these fast-swimming whales (they’ve been clocked at 21 mph). Minkes are among the smallest baleen whales, with two blowholes and a distinct white band on each flipper. They’re among the friendliest too, as minkes are known to voluntarily interact with snorkelers.
