Video: How the Giant Squid was Captured on Film for the First Time

The giant squid (Architeuthis) is one of the most elusive deep-sea creatures we have ever known. Not only does it live in some of the deepest parts of the ocean effectively out-of-sight , but it has consistently evaded predation from humans or otherwise. It should come as no surprise that when researchers caught a giant squid on film, it sent shocks throughout the oceanographic world.

In this TED talk from 2013, marine biologist Edith Widder describes the key insight that allowed them to video this shy creature. Watch as the tactics she employed allowed researchers to finally catch a glimpse of the amazing giant squid.
