Seac Smart BCD: ScubaLab Best Buy

We tested the Seac Smart. Offering solid performance at a great price, it was our Best Buy for Jacket BCs.

We tested BCs at Blue Grotto Dive Resort in Central Florida. We conducted objective tests in the pool to measure buoyant lift and inherent buoyancy and to gauge each BC’s ability to cope with a runaway power inflator.

We also conducted a series of test dives where testers scored BCs in eleven categories including comfort, stability and ascent control.

The Smart took the top score for attitude and stability in its category and inspired test diver comments such as “really good attitude control in all position” and “rock-solid stability in vertical orientation.” The wraparound harness is very comfortable and supportive, with a two-position adjustable sternum strap and lightweight cushioning along the back pad and shoulder straps. “Good comfort, feels like a nice hug,” noted one test diver. The BC sports several small stainless D-rings that are well-placed and easy to access. Cargo pockets are large, but the big, plastic zipper teeth can make the opening feel a bit narrow. Integrated weight pockets feature Velcro closures at the top and bottom for very easy loading and ditching. Testers debated about the practicality of the additional pinch-to-release buckle, but none could doubt its security. With solid performance in all categories, this BC offers a great value of comfort, control and convenience at a below average price. The Smart is our Best Buy for jacket BCs.
