RYUKYU ISLANDS GETTING THEREThe Ryukyu Islands are a chain of Japanese islands stretching from Kyushu south to the island of Taiwan. Okinawa is the largest of the Ryukyu Islands chain, and probably the most recognizable. The other islands consist of the Kerama Islands, the Daito Islands, the Sakishima Islands, the Miyako Islands, the Yaeyama Islands and the Senkaku Islands.
The Naha Airport in Okinawa is the gateway to the rest of the Ryukyu Islands, and offers a modern terminal with gift shops, restaurants, game spots, kids play areas and more. Mass transportation is available as are taxis, buses and other types of transportation.
Visitors coming from North America and Europe and will probably transit through Osaka's Kansai International Airport, Tokyo's Narita Airport, Fukuoka or Nagoya Airport. Many international airlines connect through these airports to various major cities throughout the world. From either of these, it's just a matter of connecting to a domestic flight into Naha.
However, if you plan on traveling from the east coast of the United States; be prepared for long flights and several transfers. The entire flight from New York to Okinawa can take more than two days. If you travel from the west coast, you'll have a shorter trip and fewer transfers.
