The clove capital of the world, Pemba is still a land forgotten by modern voyagers. However, its diving reputation may soon change that. Divers can access the island from Dar Es Salaam or from the island of Zanzibar, 31 miles to the south. Surrounded by small islands and rimmed by coral cliffs, Pemba is only partially explored. Underwater, visibility can range up to 130 feet. Tropical fish populate the shallower reefs while pelagic game fish such as tuna and wahoo hunt the deep along with the massive (up to 6-foot long) Napoleon wrasse. Most dives are drift dives due to the ever-present current, and most are deep and limited to more experienced divers.
