| Beginner scuba divers will appreciate the easy, shallow diving that is found in the Bahamas. There is no shortage of shallow reefs in the Bahamas. This is a direct result of the structure of the archipelago. Most islands are perched around the perimeter of the large, shallow banks, thus allowing shallow reefs leading to deeper walls. The very healthiest reefs are found in the Exumas. This chain of numerous small islands, each separated by a shallow cut with a constant tidal flow, is provided with a constant flow of nutrients. Lush coral growth and a very healthy fish population are the result. It is very hard to go wrong here. Some coral areas are so tightly packed it is difficult to settle down without potentially doing damage. Other areas have scattered coral heads interspersed with sand bottom. There is a broad variety of reef configurations, all pleasing. It is impossible to list all the best shallow reefs, but a short list follows. To favor one area is to unreasonably slight others. Good shallow reefs are found virtually everywhere in the country — no joke, everywhere. To find responsible dive operators, consult the list of Bahamas Dive Association members. Each and every one can do the job for you.TOP SITES Sandy Cay (south of Great Abaco) This is an ideal Bahamian reef. Elkhorn corals breaking the surface slope down to a 30-foot bottom. There are perfect star and brain corals, swaying gorgonians and a rich abundance of tropicals, grouper, flounder, angelfish, stingrays and much more. The reef is not large but it doesn't need to be. Quality is everything.Eric's Reef (Northern Exumas) Clusters of coral heads with numerous swim-throughs and tremendous fish life. Day dive or night dive, it doesn't matter. It is excellent anytime.Barracuda Shoals (east of Nassau/New Providence) Beginning at 8 feet and no deeper than 30 feet, this reef consists of three reef lines forming a triangle. Very healthy, very well adorned and packed with fish life. This is yet another of the very good ones.Southwest Reef (southern New Providence) A very large area, the reef is closely spaced star and elkhorn corals. As shallow as 5 feet and no deeper than 40 feet, with lots of purple sea fans and gorgonians and other soft corals. | |
