Divers, more than anyone who stays on dry land, know just how wacky and wondrous the ocean’s oddest creatures can be. Endemic to the waters off southern and eastern Australia, the leafy sea dragon mystifies divers with leaf-life appendages that provide perfect camouflage among lush forests of seaweed and kelp.

Outside of Adelaide along the Fleurieu Peninsula, Rapid Bay offers a perfectly sheltered oasis for these protected animals to thrive, and they’re regularly seen beneath the new Rapid Bay Jetty. Even in the presence of abundant divers, the creatures stay confident in their camouflage and just go about doing their slow-swimming thing.

There’s no time like fall for a Florida wreck trek. September to November is the low season for tourists—with smaller crowds come discounted accommodations, personalized service and quieter dive sites.

Fly into Fort Lauderdale, load your gear into a rental car and get your fins wet on a signature local wreck like the Tracey or Hog Heaven. Then make your way down U.S. 1 toward the Florida Keys.

A smorgasbord of hulking wrecks spans the entirety of the Keys. Start with the USS Spiegel Grove and the Duane off Key Largo. Make a pit stop in Marathon to check out the Thunderbolt. Then take the famed Seven Mile Bridge down to Key West and dive the 522-foot USNS Vandenberg before trekking back up the Overseas Highway. —Melissa Smith

Chuuk Lagoon: Wartime History in the Deep

For its calm seas and astonishing visibility, October is an ideal time to visit Chuuk Lagoon.

If you've chased hammerheads at Cocos and ridden the currents at Socorro, Chuuk Lagoon offers a unique kind of advanced diving experience, one demanding patience and reverence rather than brute fitness. This warm-water wreck mecca holds over 60 Japanese World War II vessels sunk during Operation Hailstone, now draped in sponges and corals and frozen in time—the year 1944, to be precise.

Unlike cold, dark Atlantic wrecks, these ships rest in bathwater warmth with sunlight streaming through cargo holds rich in history and life. You'll fin past tanks, fighter planes, torpedoes, old boots, china and sake bottles. You might even dip into an engine room.

Come to stroll the seaside Malecón (boardwalk) that stretches along the Sea of Cortez and for ceviche that’s muy rico. But most of all, come to La Paz to dive the waters off this spectacular stretch of Baja California Sur.

Only divers would get excited by a moniker like “the Slug Capital of the Philippines,” which is the name bestowed upon Anilao, a small, scuba-centric coastal town roughly a three-hour drive from Manila, the capital city of the Philippines. The reefs offer every bit of biodiversity and beauty you’d expect, but the real magic just might be in the muck, which can be found in shades of brown, black and red. All that variety adds up to create enough habitats for 600 nudibranch species.

October brings choice conditions for enjoying the parade of macro life. The month falls at the end of high season, and toward the end of the rainy season. Visibility starts opening up to between 50 and 100 feet, making the hunt for tiny stuff that much easier and enjoyable.

Some of the biggest gets are also perhaps the easiest to identify thanks to their easy-to-remember resemblances. Few divers will retain the name Thecacera pacifica, but most everyone can remember “Pikachu.” This bright-yellow nudi has black tipping on its rhinophores and branchial plumes. It’s also big enough in size, around an inch, that it can be easily spotted and appreciated for its fun color. Then there’s Costasiella kuroshimae, aka Shaun the Sheep. This white-faced nudi with cartoon-like black bead eyes looks like the claymation character.

Many of the nudis, including Pikachu, can be seen on night dives, which the area is legendary for. The reefs and sands come alive with so much more, including hairy frogfish, flamboyant cuttlefish and weedy scorpionfish all on the hunt. —Brooke Morton
