Santa Goes Snorkeling for Christmas

As a fundraiser for the month-long Honolulu City Lights celebration, the Friends of Honolulu City Lights celebrate Santa’s adventures by selling some pretty cool Christmas-tree ornaments. The Friends have introduced new ornaments each year as a part of their “Holoholo Series,” designed by Owen Ho. In future years, you may find him enjoying a shave ice in Hale’iwa, surfing the big waves at Makaha Beach or stopping by the set of the popular TV series, “Hawaii Five-O.” But this year? Check these out:

What does Santa do when he’s not delivering toys to good little boys and girls? He likes to go holoholo (traveling out-and-about) to Hanauma Bay to cool off with his underwater friends. He loves to snorkel in the pristine bay, taking in the multi-colored coral, a rainbow of fish and ocean life, a curious honu (sea turtle), and even a kolohe he`e (rascally playful octopus).

After his underwater snorkeling adventure, Santa returns to Honolulu Hale (City Hall) wearing his favorite flowered jams and snorkeling gear. And look, that kolohe he’e has followed him back to the fountain!

The ornaments are made from highly polished brass electroplated first with nickel and then with 24k gold, for a hard, durable finish. All proceeds from ornament sales go toward keeping the Honolulu City Lights celebration free to the public. During the holiday season event sponsors Macy's and Aloha Pacific Federal Credit Union will be selling both of the 2012 Holoholo Series ornaments at all of their O'ahu locations and First Hawaiian Bank will be selling the Honolulu Hale ornament at their O'ahu branches. You can also purchase each of the 2000-2012 ornaments by visiting the Friends' website at www.honolulucitylights.org.
