1. Canary Islands - Surfing

Off the coast of Morocco, the Canary Islands is home to year-round surfing and diving: Just be sure to let the waves dictate your schedule when aiming for a two-sport day. On the island of Lanzarote, start with dawn patrol and head north to Morro Negro, a right-hand break that stacks up anywhere from 3 to 16 feet. This wave, atop a rocky shore, isn’t for beginners, but the island offers a handful of spots friendly for newbies. And because Lanzarote offers shore diving, you can decide when to swim to lava-formed reefs, home to seahorses, grouper and barracuda. The maps of dives, such as Playa Chica and El Muellito, are so thorough, they include not only depths and points of interest, like the Hundido wreck, but also the best routes, highlighting safest points of entry and exit. cid-lanzarote.com

2. Bonaire - Windsurfing

The beauty of packing two sports into one Bonaire getaway is that with shore diving, you gain unlimited access to reefs, 24 hours a day. Choose windsurfing as a second pursuit, and you can let the wind dictate the day’s plan. Unlike scuba gear, rented on a grab-and-go system, local windsurf equipment rentals are offered only on-site at Lac Bay, on the eastern side of the island. Post-windsurf session, it’s a short drive to the island’s southwest shore, where you can visit Salt Pier. “It’s awesome to have the juxtaposition of the man-made supports with the soft corals,” says Buddy Dive’s Tina Wall of Salt Pier, “plus tarpon and octopuses, and small finds, like frogfish.” buddydive.com; bonairewindsurfplace.com

3. Thailand - Wakeboarding

To add wakeboarding to your Thailand trip, head an hour northeast of Bangkok to the Thai Wake Park, a community of sorts with an on-site restaurant, bar and the Hotel Ride ’n’ Lazy. Beginners score use of free gear, plus intro lessons. When you’re ready to dive, make your way to the coast — Phuket if you’re booked on Thailand Aggressor or bound for one of the outlying islands. aggressor.com; thaiwakepark.com

4. British Virgin Islands - Sailing

The British Virgin Islands is almost an idiot-proof destination for taking up sailing, thanks to clear waters and consistent winds. For divers, the added advantage is being able to let the wind carry you to a site of your choosing. But if you’d rather not create your own plan — or if you know you’d miss that eagle ray if a guide didn’t nudge you — then request what Sail Caribbean Divers calls rendezvous diving. Its Zodiacs fetch you for the morning (or afternoon) trip, then return you to your vessel where you’re back on your own, free to mix a drink and enjoy anchorage. sailcaribbeandivers.com

5. Key Largo, Florida - Jet Skiing

Give yourself a week in Key Largo, and you can check off the USS Spiegel Grove and the USCG Duane from your bucket list — and likely a few others. Regardless of sites logged, you’ll meet the locals: goliath grouper, nurse sharks, reef sharks and, in summer, eagle rays. If, after a few underwater days, you’re wondering where the dolphins and manatees are, consider devoting your no-dive day to a Jet Ski. Local outfitter Key Skis and Adventures leads two-hour tours daily at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Owner Brian Leavell finds that divers, well-accustomed to early routines, lean toward the morning rides. Fewer folks show before noon, but those who do set the pace. “It’s a thrill ride, not an ecotour,” he says. But even when adrenaline is your pursuit, you can’t help but notice dolphins during the open-ocean stretch of the 27-mile cruise, as well as manatees among the mangroves. rainbowreef.us; oceandivers.com; seadwellers.com

6. Baja - Dune buggying

In Baja, Mexico, the odds of sighting a humpback are fair while scuba diving — but better from a dune buggy. Cabo San Lucas operator Wide Open Excursions offers half-day trips along a track overlooking the Pacific Ocean. But if you’d rather devote your time in-water, we don’t blame you. Two hours north of Cabo, The Cortez Club, a La Paz dive operator, whisks guests to the Espiritu Santo archipelago, home year-round to California sea lions. Winters bring the biggest number of dolphins and hammerheads, and whale sharks have two seasons per year: March to May and again in October and November. James Curtiss, owner of the Cortez Club, says of whale sharks, “I believe we have some sort of connection with that animal, so, for me, there is nothing more beautiful than that simple pleasure of connecting — of seeing its awareness of what I am.” cortezclub.com; wideopenbaja.com

7. Indonesia - Snorkeling

For divers who tend to lose track of time when meeting giant mantas, cuttlefish or mola molas, remember that snorkeling is more than a skill required to pass certification. It’s quiet and simple, and can allow for longer encounters with the megafauna off Bali sites such as Manta Point and Gili Tepekong. And if you’re unsure which — snorkel or scuba — grants you more time among the fish, work with an operator such as OK Divers, which offers both. okdiversbali.com

8. Palau - Kayaking

Home to megafauna hot spot Blue Corner and natural wonder Chandelier Cave, Palau will make you pause when the option arises to trade bottom time for another sport, namely kayaking. But the Rock Islands warrant at least a day. The caves of Nikko Bay shelter what operator Sam’s Tours calls “old-growth coral forests,” spared from decades of wind and surf to reach monstrous proportions. Spots such as Long Lake give access to two worlds: reefs buzzed by spotted eagle rays and feather-tail stingrays, and the rainforest canopy overhead, heavy with mosses, ferns and fruit doves. samstours.com

9. Lanai and Maui, Hawaii - Paddleboarding

The Pineapple Isle (Lanai) and Valley Isle (Maui) pair nicely if you want to combine stellar diving with other watersports, like stand-up paddleboarding. If you’ve got the skills, Hawaiian Rafting Adventures and Dive Maui’s Capt. Steve Juarez will take you to Lighthouse Point, where you’ll end the dive at Eagle Ray Bay. Who would blame you for tingling like a kid on Christmas morning? “There’s the possibility of seeing whitetip sharks, dolphins and spotted eagle rays as we sail over the reef in the current,” says Juarez. On the boat ride out to Lanai, you’re nearly guaranteed to see spinner, bottlenose and spotted dolphins, and “Maui’s perfect climate and prevailing trade winds make stand-up paddleboarding a year-round sport,” says Juarez. goscubadivemaui.com

10. Grand Cayman - Parasailing

OK, so parasailing isn’t a sport — in fact, riders don’t control much when lifted 500 to 800 feet above the Seven Mile Beach waterfront. And yet, you’ll likely want to go again to document the bird’s-eye view if awe and adrenaline keep you from snapping as many photos as you’d like the first time. Plus, in-air time is just 10 minutes. For a longer rush, head to Divetech and Lighthouse Point Dive Resort on the island’s northwestern tip. There, rent scooters to explore the wall at your own pace. The staff gives lessons, even offering a specialty course in DPV riding, as skill is necessary for riding at the depth intended, even as an eagle ray or green turtle sidles up alongside. divetech.com
