Dive Guide to Komodo

Greg Lecoeur
Whether you decide to explore Komodo National Park via liveaboard or with a land-based dive operator, the area offers many ways to discover its colorful culture and vast array of wildlife.
**Villages on Stilts **
Some of the islands within the park are populated by sea gypsies who welcome visitors to their villages built on stilts.
Beaches of Many Colors
Over 70 islands boast loads of perfect tropical beaches, most of them completely deserted. Coming in shades of white, yellow and pink, even the sands here are colorful.
Flying Foxes?
KNP is home to a number of raptors like kites or eagles, as well as an endemic species of cockatoo. Not birds, but another flying attraction are the flying foxes, the world’s largest bat species, which roost in the mangroves and take off at dusk to feed on fruit from the larger islands.
Walking Adventures
From gentle five-minute climbs to tough multiday treks into the savannah and monsoon forest, there are countless options, depending on your fitness level.
Where Giant Lizards Roam
A trip here wouldn’t be complete without paying a visit to the world’s largest lizard. Although the iconic Komodo dragons are excellent swimmers, they are not found anywhere else. Thermoregulation limits their distribution because their internal temperature cools when they come in contact with water.
