5 New Year's Resolutions for Divers

A new year is almost upon us, and most of the world is busy making promises to lose weight, save money or spend more time with family. However, for us divers, a new year means only one thing—365 more days to dive!

The start of a new year represents a fresh chapter, and the dive industry is a world in which you can continuously learn, grow and try new things. If you haven’t thought about your New Year’s resolutions yet, we put together a list to make sure that your 2020 is filled with salt water, bubbles and vitamin sea.

1. Add to Your Dive Log

Double it, triple it or just add one—every dive counts! A logbook to a diver is like a passport to a travel addict. There’s no better feeling than adding a fresh stamp from a new dive shop and recounting the best parts of your experience underwater.

2. Visit a New Dive Site

It’s a common misconception that you have to jump on a plane or travel far to experience something new. Even if you dive locally in your hometown, there’s always more to explore. We tend to have our favorite dive sites that keep us coming back again and again, whether it’s colorful macro life or a playful sea lion colony. But what happens if you descend a few miles over, or walk out on a different beach? You never know what may be waiting for you!

3. Convince a Friend to Join You

Like all good things in life, diving is more fun with a friend. Do you remember your first time dropping below the surface? You may have fallen in love with the serenity underwater, the sound of the bubbles or the ability to enter a new world that you had never seen before. Whatever it was, it brought you back again and again. Inviting a new diver to join gives them the opportunity to experience the same thing you did that first time. Plus, you might get a new dive buddy out of it!

4. Learn a New Skill

The start of a new year is often a time to reflect on how to improve yourself in the future. Diving is a sport in which you can constantly grow, learn and develop new skills. Even professional divers with decades of experiences and thousands of dives under their weight belt will admit they are still learning. That’s what separates a great diver from the rest. PADI offers a range of Specialty Diver courses that teach new techniques and provide the necessary tools to enhance your exploration underwater. Master your buoyancy, try technical diving, improve air consumption or learn underwater photography skills—the options are endless!

5. Give Back to the Ocean

The ocean gives us everything—it’s time to show our appreciation! As divers, we are well aware of the perils facing the underwater world, from plastic pollution to shark finning and coral bleaching. There are ways you can help while utilizing your unique skills as a diver. Organize or participate in an ocean cleanup, like Project AWARE Dive Against Debris, or volunteer for hands-on conservation work, like a coral restoration workshop. The only better feeling than diving is diving to do good.
