Every year, humpback whales make the 3,500-mile trek from their feeding grounds in Alaska to the warmer waters of Kona, Hawaii. These gentle giants — they weigh about 40 tons and span 40 feet — propel themselves with their massive flukes, and can be seen leaping out of the water, leaving a gigantic splash behind. Getting in the water is prohibited, but boat tours are popular so you can view these colossal creatures.
