Blue sharks are highly migratory, regularly crossing between the U.S. and Europe. In the Pacific, migrations of more than 5,000 miles have been recorded. They also have the dubious honor of being the most fished shark in the world.

Since 2000, scientists calculate that more than 10 million blue sharks have been caught yearly.

Facts about Blue Sharks

Size: On average, a blue shark will grow to be 12.5 feet in length. They can weigh up to about 450 pounds.

Conservation Status: IUCN Near Threatened

Habitat: Blue sharks are found in very deep, cooler waters. They are often found in subtropical areas.

Did You Know? A female blue shark's litter can vary widely, from 4 pups to more than 130. The mother does not stay with the pups, so they are immediately left to take care of themselves.
