Sea of Cortez, Coronado IslandsDivers will be enthralled with the 800 species of fish and marine life they'll find in the Sea of Cortez. Keep your eyes peeled for abalone, California barracuda and spiny lobster, whale sharks, grey whales, rays, and playful sea lions around North Coronado Island. The northern end of the Cortez waters tend to have less visibility due to heavy silt, and tides may be problematic. Visibility in the fall is around 60 feet, while winter months drop this to 30-50 feet. Divers say the best spots are in the south near La Paz and Los Cabos. A popular means of traveling about the numerous spots around Baja is a live-aboard vessel; some sites may otherwise take an hour or more to reach from the coast. Warm waters dictate a 3mm suit, but come prepared for the colder temperatures; you'll want a 5-6mm suit with a hood and gloves.
