Divers Rescue Dog Swimming in Ocean, Miles Away from Shore
Divers can claim responsibility for a host of impressive marine rescues, from whale sharks to oceanic whitetips.
But this might be the most unlikely ocean rescue we’ve ever seen.

A group of divers were several miles from Belize’s Pompion Caye — about 30 minutes offshore — when someone spotted a dog in the water. After a couple of attempts, the divers were able to rescue the frightened dog and bring it aboard.

The story — or the “Sunday Miracle of Dive Boat Three” as the divers call it — gets even more amazing. There happened to be a veterinarian on the boat and another diver had a dog collar and leash onboard. The divers said that the dog was in shock at first, avoiding touch and shivering. But, by the time the group reached shore, he’d melted everyone’s heart. Neptune and Salty Dog were among the temporary names given to the dog on the way back to Placencia.
The Placencia Humane Society — which estimates the dog to be about a year old — tried to track down the owner of the pup for a week. After they had no success two members of the original dive group provided a new home.
The dog’s new name? Lucky.
The whole dive trip was part of a Diving For Life event. Diving For Life is a non-profit group that sponsors the The International Gay and Lesbian SCUBA Jamboree, an annual fundraising event. The organization has raised more than $1 million over the course of 25-plus years, including $67,000 during this event.
