The islands of Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinique comprise the country of Grenada and the tail of the Windward Islands. Most notable for an American military invasion in 1983 to remove Cuban Communists, Grenada has plenty of its own items of note. First on the list of notables must be nutmeg. The Spice Island provides one-third of the world's nutmeg. It's even depicted on their flag. Grenada's fertile volcanic slopes also produce cinnamon, clove, ginger, saffron, allspice and cocoa. Also notable is hiking in Grand Etang National Park in the island's interior, which includes the 30-acre crater Grand Etang Lake. Notable in the water is the Bianca C., the largest diveable wreck in the Caribbean. More than 600 feet long, this Italian cruise ship burned and sank in 1961. Because of the depth and currents, this is a dive for intermediate and advanced divers. The ship's size and quick drifting waters make it a dive worth repeating several times. There is also plenty of reef diving - much of it drift - for divers of all skill levels. Carriacou, 20 miles north, has excellent reefs loaded with swaying soft corals and dense fish populations. An overnight stay in one of the island's tiny inns is a worthwhile experience. American, BWIA and Air Jamaica provide connecting air service. English is the official language.
