Andre GillonA devil ray off Santa Maria Island
Provided description: In the summer, when water temperatures rise in the middle of the north Atlantic Ocean, several seamounts located in the Azores Archipelago receive a pleasant visit from several groups of devil rays (Mobula tarapacana). This photograph captures a devil ray changing direction to avoid contact with a group of divers that are swimming toward it. Taken in Dollabarat reef, an offshore dive off the coast of Santa Maria Island (Azores, Portugal), where devil rays, giant dusky grouper, schools of pelagic fish, and, if lucky, whale sharks and manta rays, can be seen against a dazzling blue color provided by the wild Atlantic.
