Wedding News: Bora Bora's Newest Underwater Chapel

For a bride and groom seeking an intimate ceremony mixing tradition, excitement, innovation and a love for (in addition to each other) the ocean, it’s time to book a flight to Bora Bora. This tropical location is already a popular vacation and honeymoon site, but it’s got something really special for ocean lovers: an underwater wedding chapel.

Known in Tahitian as “Te-Ana-Ipo,” the “cave of love,” an underwater wedding is do-able for any set of lovers — no dive experience needed. The descent isn’t too deep either: only 12 feet down.

It’s a pretty stylish way to tie the knot, or even re-tie it, especially if you like turquoise for a wedding color. The traditional veil and top hat are replaced by underwater helmets.

Lovers are escorted to Te-Ana-Ipo by outrigger canoe and treated to local musicians playing for ambience, a personal hostess and delectable fruits and refreshments.

Included in the 30-minute ceremony: music, vows, ring exchange, marriage certificate signing, and a DVD filmed by a professional videographer. Then top it all off with a bottle of champagne.

This wedding is pretty customizable, too. There’s a half-day rate ($3,470 USD) or a full day rate ($4,217 USD), which includes a one-hour photo shoot following a private beachside lunch of foie gras on toast, Tahitian raw fish, grilled fish and chicken with crudités, local fruit and local desserts.

Although the underwater wedding isn’t legally recognized, it’s one seriously cool way to combine your love for the ocean and each other.
