Miami Airport Layover Guide

Steven Brooke

Don't while away that MIA layover playing Angry Birds as you wait for your onward flight at the gate. Instead, arrive refresehed with these five insider tips.

Best Place to Eat

The line might be long at Terminal D's Icebox Café, but that's because Miami folks live in swimsuits. They know to eat right, starting with the Health Nut sandwich with hummus, veggies and feta. The breads are delicious and the Curry Chicken Mango Salad is also a smart pick, but if your last flight left you ravenous, order the Black Angus Meatloaf Sandwich.

Best Place to Grab a Drink**

You'll hope for a delay so you can order another pour at Beaudevin Wine Bar, a February 2011 addition to Terminal D. The menu offers adventurous whites, vibrant reds, provocative pinots and more. If you're feeling indecisive, let the wait staff steer you -- they know the menu intimately. Skip the veggie small plates (too oily) and opt instead for the artisanal cheese plate.

Best Reason to Leave Your Terminal

For a real mojito, leave it to Cuban Gloria Estefan. The bartenders at her joint -- Bongos Cuban Café in Terminal H/J -- pour a cocktail stiff enough to ready you for surgery. True masters of the drink, they add just enough lime and sugar so no element overpowers. If you want more than a liquid lunch, try the Cuban sandwich or black bean dip.

Best Souvenir Snagging

Terminal D has made shopping fun again with the Shoppes at Ocean Drive -- most notably George Stone Crab. If you think the 3-pound box of claws might not be enough, upgrade to the 6-pounder. Availability extends from mid-October to mid-May, and don't forget the mustard sauce.

Wild Card

JetSetter Spa, located outside security in Terminal H/J, offers deep tissue, Swedish, scalp and foot massages, starting at 10 minutes in length. With five treatment rooms available, you won't have to wait. Serenity now! (305-876-0011)
