Fair Winds and Crystal Seas
British Virgin Islands
The British Virgin Islands haven't changed much over the years, and that's high praise considering the pressure of development these days. These islands still welcome you with blue skies, vibrant green hillsides and clear water. Well, that and a lot of sailboats this Caribbean getaway is also a haven for those whose vocabulary includes "spinnaker" and "forecastle." Even the luxury live-aboard Cuan Law is a sailing trimaran. BVI diving offers plenty of excitement for any level diver, but it's generally relaxing and easy. Depths rarely exceed 70 feet, currents are usually mild and the visibility is often in the 80- to 120-foot range. Marine-park protection has kept the reefs in good shape, and fishing restrictions have kept the finny population high. With dive sites scattered all over the islands, there is always a good selection for any weather conditions. Some of the favorites include the Indians, a circular tour; Painted Walls, an encrusted alleyway; Alice in Wonderland, a sprawling slope of star coral; and the Chimney, a colorful slot among the rocks.

The RMS Rhone, which went down in a hurricane in 1867, tops the list of BVI wrecks, but it's by no means the only one. An oasis of life on the sandy plain north of Tortola, the 246-foot Chikuzen is another favorite. Wreck Alley features three ships in close proximity: the Pat, the Mary L and the Beata, and the freighter Inganess Bay is not far away. The Fearless, the Willie T and the Airplane Wreck round out the BVI's artificial-reef selection.
Headlining the topside BVI attractions are the Baths. Bring footgear you can get wet for the hiking tour it's a fascinating trip. The nature trails on Virgin Gorda offer opportunities for hiking, and if sunning and swimming are your thing, head for Cane Garden Bay, Brewers Bay or any of the dozens of other great beaches.
