THE TRUE SPIRIT OF HAWAII IS "ALOHA"
HELPING ONE ANOTHER... Recently, Red Sails Sports hosted several groupsfrom the "Make a Wish Foundation". They enjoyed sailing aboard our 'Noa Noa' catamaran. "We consider it a privilege to grant special requests for the children and their families," explains Diane Rice from Red Sail Sports Hawaii. Additionally, we're proud to have participated in a series of Hawaii community events that were sponsored by the resorts along the Big Island's Kohala Coast. Working together to help one another, we all really got behind these worthwhile fundraisers. Hilton Waikoloa Village had great food and fun at a sold-out event - the Headdress Ball. All proceeds go to the Big Island Food Bank. The Orchid at Mauna Lani sponsored the Island's United Way fundraiser on August 17; all the hotels along the coast participated. On September 6, the Four Seasons at Hualalai hosted the Terry Fox Fundraiser for cancer research. Guests enjoyed wonderful food, wine, a golf tournament, plus a silent auction featuring room and airfare packages at Four Seasons resorts worldwide. · On September 14, Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel threw the Big Island POKE (PO-KEH) "Hawaii's Soul Food" contest and Golf Tournament. All profits go to benefit the Kawaihae Transitional Housing. Also, on September 10, Red Sail Sports hosted 20 Mrs. America Pageant participants on Lagoon Beach at the Hilton Waikoloa Village. Please join us October 19 for the 20th Ironman Triathlon, an annual Big Island highlight and world-class event.
"Shipwreck City" Project Gets the Green Light
Our own Red Sail Sports Grand Cayman Operations Manager, Rod McDowall, also holds the auspicious title as President of the Cayman Islands Tourism Association (CITA). For the past two years, CITA has been working with the Cayman Government to direct funds towards their brainchild - the "Shipwreck City" project. It would involve sinking five ships in the waters around Grand Cayman and Little Cayman. Nancy Romanica, CITA Watersports Director and Shipwreck City Project Manager said, "In addition to providing a very popular underwater attraction for our visitors, shipwrecks also offer great opportunities for scientific studies of artificial reef development, fish colonization and bio-diversity studies. Already, a number of very reputable scientific research units have expressed their interest in working with the Cayman Islands to push forward the border of knowledge for marine research and conservation."
The Hon. McKeeva Bush, Leader of Government Business and Minister for Tourism, Environment, Development and Commerce just announced that in 2003, the Cayman Islands' government will provide funds to kick start the "Shipwreck City" project. The Minister is in contact with the United Kingdom Ministry of Defense to secure a British war ship with historic connections to the Caribbean as Shipwreck City's first potential vessel. The Hon. McKeeva Bush concluded, "there is no better year than 2003 to inaugurate Shipwreck City, especially with sinking a British ship as a monument signifying our historic links to the United Kingdom. With the commencement of this project during our quincentennial anniversary year, we are celebrating our past, our present and most importantly, our successful future."
