Tracking Hurricane Matthew's Impact on the Dive Community
Hurricane Matthew reached Category 4 status as it moved over the Caribbean and western Atlantic, causing catastrophic damage in Haiti, Cuba and other areas Wednesday and moving to the Bahamas Thursday.
With the hurricane leaving a reported death toll of more than 300 people in Haiti and extensive damage on the islands of Grand Bahama and New Providence in the Bahamas, where it made a direct hit, we are keeping an eye on updates from the dive community in affected areas. The Bahamas – Monday
The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism announced that the islands are welcoming back divers after Hurricane Matthew. Read more here.
Olympus Dive Center, N.C. - Friday
As Hurricane Matthew rolled up the east coast of the U.S., Olympus Dive Center in Morehead City, North Carolina, said that things are OK at the shop.
The Bahamas – Friday
The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism shared an update Friday, saying that it is now assessing the hurricane's impact on the islands. At the time, the MOT is reporting that there is some damage, but no known loss of life as of now. Hurricane Matthew made direct impact on many of the islands – including New Providence and Grand Bahama – Thursday, with winds being recorded at 120 mph at Exuma Airport.
Jupiter Dive Center - Friday
Jupiter Dive Center, located in Florida's Palm Beach County, reports that there is no major damage to the shop, but the forecast for the next few days does not look great for diving.
Stuart Cove's Dive Bahamas - Thursday
Matthew made a direct hit on New Providence Islands in the Bahamas on Thursday. Stuart Cove said in a Facebook video that the dive boats did not incur major damage, although they lost a couple of their movie sets at the shop and part of a dock. Check out the video above for more info.
Bimini Big Game Club - Thursday
Bimini is northwest of New Providence, so we may not have a complete picture of the damage until later. Check back for updates.
