Captain's Log: Okeanos Aggressor
April 10-20, 2001 WATER TEMPERATURE: 82FVISIBILITY: AVERAGE OF 80 FTAIR TEMPERATURE: 80F Crossing to Cocos Island from the port of Puntarenas, Costa Rica was easy. Smooth rolling at 2 feet seas and a strong continental current against us. We made it to the island just in time for the 8 o'clock check out dive. Regular white tip action and schooling reef fish flourished the scenery at Manuelita. The following two dives in that area made smiley faces among our guests because of green Leatherback turtles and a small eagle ray family. The first night dive was done at Chatham Bay right under the ship and after exercising underwater navigation we reached the froggies rock. I lost control of counting but those two Frogfish have been there forever and wouldn't move a bit. Taking advantage of the good weather, next day we hit for Iglesias Bay, dove Submerged Rock and Lone Stone but still had very little Hammerhead action. Now, the other day at Dos Amigos and Dirty Rock finally a nice big school of our favorite Hammerheads circled the area. Alcyone, discovered by famous J. Cousteau, was the highlight. Big time activity with hammerheads, marble rays and white tips! The afternoon dive at Silverado, where we always have very impressing encounters with huge silver tip sharks, was pretty quiet, this time. Due to the season we had a couple of rainy days but it didn't bother us. On the way out to our last dive at Alcyone, we were lucky with a very active bait ball. Reaching, we got in the water and silkies, black tips, galapagos sharks, spotted dolphins, big eye tuna and silver tips, were feeding on yellow tail scads! Nice people and loads of fun made this an great charter. May12th, we'll head for Ecuador to dry dock and we'll be back in the water with our new OKEANOS AGGRESSOR by mid June. All the best! -- The OKEANOS AGGRESSOR crew. For more information about diving Cocos Island from the Okeanos Aggressor, click on the home page below.
