Despite Cyclone Winston, Fiji is Open for Diving

iStockDiver operators have reopened after Cyclone Winston hit the island country.
Sometimes the best way to help a dive destination you love is simple. Go diving.
Although Cyclone Winston did major damage as it tore across the island of Fiji last month, Beqa Lagoon Resort - located in Pacific Harbour, on the south side of the main island of Viti Levu - had relatively few effects.
"Luckily, very little damage has been done to Beqa Lagoon Resort," says general manager Dieter Kudler. "Only our garden suffered, and it seems our pier in Pacific Harbour is gone. But we are up and running."
Fijians have launched a major clean up effort across the island nation. Over 50,000 people were evacuated to emergency shelters during the storm and many remote regions still have a long road to recovery. But progress has been made thanks to international aid from neighboring countries like Australia and New Zealand, which have sent over not only medical supplies and water purification equipment, but also helicopters to get help to where it is needed the most.
Already the Nadi International Airport on the main island of Viti Levu has been reopend after being closed for the weekend and resorts are eagerly prepping for tourists to return.
