Dive Into Eco-Tourism With The Green Coconut Run

OCEAN ACTION: Set Sail With The Green Coconut Run

MISSION: Sailing as stewards for the ocean, the Green Coconut Run invites volunteers to dive into marine conservation, collect data for researchers and lend their voices to the South Seas.

HQ: Aldebaran, a 42-foot trimaran

YEAR STARTED: 2015

CONTACT: greencoconutrun.com

PROJECT: This sailing co-op started as a way for ecology-minded friends to explore the South Seas and developed into a three-year project to give back to the ocean. “During the voyage, we are gathering water samples for scientists to evaluate the amount of micro-plastics in different parts of the ocean,” says Sabrina Littée, first mate and divemaster aboard Aldebaran. Samples collected are given to Adventurers and Scientists for Conservations (ASC) for research.

1. COME ABOARD
Become part of the crew! In addition to diving, surfing, sailing, and otherwise immersing yourself in the journey, you’ll help collect scientific data and aid coastal communities. Details on its upcoming destinations are available on its website, and the ship is equipped to accommodate diver participation. “The daily cost ranges from $50 to $150 per day,” says Litee. “Scuba diving using our compressor and gear is an additional $50 per day.”

2. GRANT A WISH
One of the realities of an expedition at sea is, put simply, that boats are expensive. And to continue their mission, the Green Coconut Run crew could use your help keeping Aldebaran seaworthy. The volunteers and researchers aboard make most repairs themselves, so donations of all sorts are greatly appreciated. Check the website for the boat’s wish list, which ranges from a new auto-pilot system to scuba regulators and BCs.

3. WATCH & SHARE
If you’d like to take part in the journey but can’t make it aboard Aldebaran, a small donation will get you VIP access to the project. Adventures and highlights from the Green Coconut Run are documented in a video series on the crowdfunding website Patreon. Patronage of viewers like you keeps the boat afloat and the captain fed. Plus those who donate get rewards like magnets, T-shirts and solar-powered lights.
