Divers Hunt for Undiscovered Shipwrecks Detected from Space in New Discovery Series

Hunting for treasure worth millions hidden inside undiscovered shipwrecks that were detected from space: It sounds like the premise for a pretty thrilling novel and the stuff of adventure-loving divers' dreams. But it's also the basis for a new series titled Cooper's Treasure, which premieres tonight on Discovery Channel at 10 p.m. eastern time.

Gordon Cooper was one of the Original 7 astronauts, and he set a U.S. record for the longest solo space flight, which still stands today. But Cooper did more than just float in orbit up there. According to Discovery, he was tasked with scouting for nuclear sites in the 1960s and while doing so, he found magnetic anomalies that he assumed to be shipwrecks. Cooper worked for decades researching and tracking information about these wrecks before dying in 2004 of heart failure. Now, Cooper's longtime friend Darrell Miklos is picking up the search, and that's where the series comes in. Check out the trailer above or excerpt below to see what's in store.

“From the mid-’90s till his passing, we always talked about treasure, but [it was] not till 2002 that he revealed to me that he had all these files for decades,” Miklos told Fox News. “I’m privileged to be the only man with these files."

Miklos and the Discovery crew pinpointed five sites in the Caribbean to look for wrecks, and Miklos says they were five-for-five in discovering wrecks.

Whether he becomes rich off these hidden gems is yet to be determined, but in the least Miklos may be able to find more sites for us divers.
