Kuwaiti divers Reem Aleidan and Mubarak Abuhaimad established two world records off Nassau, Bahamas, according to Stuart Cove’s Dive Bahamas.

Aleidan set the record for longest underwater dive with sharks by a woman (5 hours) and Abuhaimad set the same record for a man (7 hours 49 min).

The pair of divers prepared to break the Guinness World records for longest underwater dives for a man and woman, but were unable to complete the 60-plus hour dive due to equipment issues, according to Tribune 242. The divers, however, were able to complete their primary goal: raising awareness of women’s rights and strengthen the image of women in the Middle East.

"I went from coaching her to diving with her and now together we have done something amazing in hopes of improving the lives of so many others," Abuhaimad told the Tribune. "[Reem] is a spectacular woman and I am happy that she asked me to do this with her."

The divers told the Tribune that they hope to return in September to take another crack at the Guinness World records.

"The calm peaceful waters of Nassau, Bahamas provided the perfect setting for the event, as I had originally planned to break this record in Egypt. However, working with my friend and Team Leader Alharith Alateeqi, we moved the venue to the Bahamas, specifically, to his friend, Stuart Cove and his location in Nassau. The warm waters of the Bahamas are close to the USA, and served the event well," said Aleidan in a release.
