Boring? Not

Do yourself a favor and plan a day on the Shubenacadie (shoo-bin-ack-ady) River, about a 40-minute ride from Halifax. This is where the Bay of Fundy's monstrous tidal fluctuation is channeled up a river, creating a geophysical phenomenon called a tidal bore: two or three waves ranging in size from 4 to 8 feet in height that rush upriver. This turns a low-tide, narrow stream into fun city, complete with rapids, whirlpools (that you'll actually drive down into) and surfing waves. The scenery is green farmland; American bald eagles are as common as gulls, and you'll have a blast chasing the bore in a powered inflatable. For more information:Tidal Bore Rafting Ltd., 902-752-0899 or 888-244-9283.Shubenacadie Tidal Bore Park, 902-758-4032; e-mail: [email protected]; Web site: www.fox.nstn.ca/~raftcamp.Shubenacadie River Adventure, 902-471-6595 or 888-878-8687.
