Stranded Freediver Followed by Tiger Shark

iStockA spearfishing freediver who became separated from his boat says he is lucky to be alive after swimming miles back to shore while being followed by a tiger shark.
John Craig had to swim for more than three hours in Western Australia waters before reaching shore after being separated by his boat due to strong current. He used his speargun to fend off a tiger shark that followed him.
Craig was fishing underwater when his boat experienced engine problems and was swept away in strong currents.
He tried unsuccessfully to get the attention of his crewmate. When he looked underwater, he spotted a 13-foot tiger shark approaching him within arm's reach.
When Craig also spotted a sandbar whaler shark circling behind him, he made the decision to swim toward shore. It took him three hours.
