A shallow, sandy bank leads divers 20-30 feet down toward Calabas Reef, a sloping smorgasbord of hard and soft corals, as well as sea sponges aplenty. Spotted and green moray eels, barracuda, a variety of parrotfish and pompanos criss-cross Calabas Reef’s coral banks and crevices like their own Caribbean resort. Octopus and tarpons can sometimes be spotted during the daytime, and adventuresome night divers might even pick up some tarpon tag-alongs. The reef eventually plunges down a 100-foot drop off, giving divers a glimpse into the ocean depths below. The occasional sea turtle can be found snoozing along the drop off, as well.

Calabas Reef gifts divers more than lush corals to explore. A small sailboat wreck rests 75 feet down, crusted with corals and teeming with sea life for divers to poke around. A massive anchor sits 15-20 feet down at the shallows’ end, a popular point of entry and return for navigating Calabas Reef’s sloped terrain.

Calabas Reef is also mercifully current-free for novice divers, making this house reef enjoyable for the whole family.
