Shark Girl to the Rescue

Madison Stewart is a 20-year-old with a mission; a mission to save sharks in the Great Barrier Reef. Since childhood Stewart has been swimming, and she has spent almost every day of her life in the ocean.
Stewart started scuba diving at the age of 12 and mostly spent her time at the Great Barrier Reef. Aptly nicknamed "Shark Girl," she has grown to love sharks and feels that they are the brothers and sisters that she never had.
Logging so many dives in the Great Barrier Reef she saw it go from a thriving environment for sharks to only one shark that was too afraid to approach her.
Taking things into her own hands, Stewart has started a campaign to end shark fishing in Australia. She put school on hold, over her grandmother’s protests, and set out with her camera and scuba gear in hand.
She ran tests and was shocked by the level of mercury that was found in shark meat that was being sold to the public.
While her attempts to end shark fin and meat consumption have been met with resistance she is not discouraged.
She will continue to educate as many people as she can about the dangers of consuming sharks, not only for their own health but also for the health of the ocean.
