The tiniest details in an eye are not always easy to spot when underwater, but over time you’ll learn which fish give shots that little extra oomph.

Some fish eyes reflect beautiful patterns, such as dwarf lionfish and porcupinefish; the blue-eye stingfish even gets its common name from how its eye reflects light in photos. This red Irish lord, photographed off Canada’s Vancouver Island, is well known for the stippling that helps camouflage this ambush predator’s eye.
