What Scuba Diving Gear You Have to Buy

So you're ready to get scuba certified? There are a few things you will need to buy before beginning your in-water training. Generally, the scuba shop or resort you plan to get certified at will provide you with a tank, weights, a BC, regulator and dive computer. (Don’t know what any of that is? Here’s a guide.)

However, you will be responsible for purchasing (or renting) a mask, snorkel and fins.

These three basic gear items are required by all certification agencies. While some dive shops will let you rent these, it's always better to own these pieces of gear because they require a personal fit.

Mask

Price Range: $25-$150

A scuba diving mask can make or break your dive. A mask can come in many styles and colors but, most importantly, it needs to fit your face. Don't risk renting a mask when you can buy your own and be certain it has a good, watertight fit.

Snorkel

Price Range: $15-$75

Essential for open-water training courses, a snorkel is the curved tube you use to breathe out of when you're at the surface. Again, this piece of equipment comes in many styles and colors, but it’s most important that the mouthpiece fits comfortably in your mouth.

Fins

Price Range: $65-$200

Good fins will make your dives easier and more enjoyable. There are two main styles of fins: full-foot and open-heel. Deciding between the two comes down to personal preference. Again, fit and comfort matters most but there are a few other things to take into consideration. Divers with strong leg muscles can efficiently use a bigger, stiffer fin. Smaller divers or less-conditioned divers will be more comfortable with smaller, more flexible fins.
