Based on what we see on coral reefs, those not versed in the marine sciences may have the impression that warm seas produce the most marine life. Actually, coral reefs are a conspicuous exception the ocean's warmest waters are the least biologically productive. The ocean's temperate and polar regions produce by far the most marine life. This isn't to say that the coral reefs aren't crucial environments they are very important. The point is that if you dive only on coral reefs, you'll miss most of what diving has to offer.
