Happy Hour Dive Site: Lanai Cathedrals
Why It’s an Editor’s Pick: Hawaii’s world-renowned Lanai Cathedrals are a can’t-miss experience when you’re diving the islands. Over centuries, flowing lava has cooled underwater to create a maze of tubes, caverns, walls and ledges that’s so unique, you’d be hard-pressed to find a similar site elsewhere in the ocean. While you venture through the lava formations, you’ll come across friendly turtles, whitetip reef sharks, stealthy octopuses and the occasional manta.
With Dive Maui’s Lanai Scuba Charter, Cathedrals I and II can be dived as a double-feature for an afternoon filled with excitement. Although the ride to Lanai from Maui can take up to 45 minutes, the diving and views of Lanai’s shoreline are well worth the ride. Plus, the boat crew will provide snacks and drinks and make sure you’re comfortable throughout the trip.
Signature Experience: Don’t forget to pack your snorkel — whale season is upon us! Each year from November to April, more than 10,000 humpback whales make the 3,500-mile migration from the northern Pacific to the tropical waters of Hawaii. You’ll definitely hear their songs while you’re underwater, but if you’re not lucky enough to see a humpback on your dives, whale-watching boat tours are offered through many operators on Maui. And to truly experience the wonders of these massive animals, you’ll want to get in the water alongside them by booking a snorkel experience.
After you get back to the dive shop, head to Mala Ocean Tavern. It’s just a few blocks away and offers some of the best fare on the island.
Watch the Sunset during Happy Hour at: Mala Ocean Tavern

Why It’s an Editor’s Pick: The beachfront location and open-air seating of Mala Ocean Tavern offers amazing views of the sunset off Maui’s western coast. Watch turtles poke their noses to surface in the Pacific waters while you kick back post-dive and soak in the relaxed Aloha spirit.
Signature Drink: A sweet blend of both white and orange-flavored Bacardi rum, Disaronno amaretto, orange and pineapple juice — topped with a dark rum float — the Kama'aina Mai Tai is a true Hawaiian specialty. Served with a pineapple wedge and colorful umbrella, this drink captures the tropical essence of the islands perfectly. The name, Kama'aina, translates to “child of the land” and is used to refer to Hawaiian residents. And you might just consider moving to Maui after a full day of fantastic diving and a night of mai tais at Mala.
