Underwater Pavilions is a large-scale art installation anchored Dec. 4 in the underwater park at Casino Point off Southern California’s Santa Catalina Island. Composed of three geometric structures submerged at 5, 10 and 50 feet, the exhibit invites divers and snorkelers to swim inside the 12-sided structures where mirrored internal surfaces create kaleidoscopic visual effects.

“Over 70 percent of the surface of Earth is ocean, and the seascape offers unique opportunities to create works that constantly shift, change, evolve with the tide and the sun,” creator Doug Aitken told the Los Angeles Times. “A project like this asks us to reconsider our perception of something that may on the surface seem mundane, but when you dive deeper, the complexity is apparent.” The exhibit, which was created from environmentally friendly materials to protect the sensitive ecosystem of the state marine conservation area, is temporary; however at the time of printing, no end date had been determined.
